Edinburgh city region is a member of an elite group of 22 areas of Europe which have been recognised as a “Region of Innovation Excellence” – an award that recognises the outstanding research in its universities and institutions, particularly in medicine, life sciences and microelectronics.

Universities

This strength lies in the research power of its academic institutions – it is home to the sixth highest-ranking university in Europe, alongside Oxford, Cambridge and three in London.

Teaching Hospitals

Edinburgh’s reputation as a world-class centre of excellence for medicine is built on almost three centuries of teaching. NHS Lothian's hospitals have long-established links to Edinburgh's prestigious universities and colleges. A new world-class Centre for Biomedical Research has opened next to the Royal Infirmary.

Technology Transfer Organisations

The region is internationally renowned for its track record in commercialisation and technology transfer. Edinburgh is an acknowledged leader in technology convergence and a world-influencer across numerous disciplines, including life sciences, informatics, electronics and energy.

Incubators and Innovation Centres

Research today is more than likely to be a business enterprise with a combination of research and commercialisation. The objective is that after up to three years in incubators, companies move into the science parks.

Science Parks

The Edinburgh Science Triangle’s unique collaboration of science parks is recognised as Scotland’s most enterprising area, with the aim of promoting Edinburgh city region’s science capability and quality infrastructure to attract research and technology companies to the area.
