Hospitals in the Edinburgh Science Triangle
Edinburgh’s reputation as a world-class centre of excellence for
medicine is built on almost three centuries of teaching. The
University of Edinburgh’s Faculty of Medicine was formally
recognised in 1726 and can claim many distinguished medical
practitioners and scientists among its alumni and staff.
The school became the leading centre for medical research in
Europe – a reputation that it enjoyed for most of the 18th and 19th
centuries and which provides a strong foundation for its teaching
today.
With long-established links to Edinburgh's prestigious
universities and colleges, many of the dedicated health
professionals working with NHS Lothian are at the forefront of
improving the care of patients in Lothian and beyond.
NHS Lothian's University Hospitals Division (UHD) provides a
comprehensive range of acute adult and children's services to the
population of Edinburgh and the Lothians, and more specialised
health services for patients from all over Scotland. The division's
13,000 staff are committed to delivering the highest quality care
to patients.
The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh

founded in 1729. The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh’s new £190

purpose-built 900-bed state-of-the-art teaching hospital.
